Every family moving to Dubai asks the same question: "Which school is the best?" There is no single correct answer — but there is a reliable compass: KHDA's annual school inspection ratings.

In the 2023–24 academic year, 209 private schools in Dubai were inspected. Only 23 received "Outstanding" status. I have reviewed, visited and gathered parent feedback on each of them. Below you'll find both KHDA data and first-hand observations from years of coaching families through this process.

Özlem Çimen — Coach's note

When I first moved to Dubai, I started by searching "best school list." Facebook groups, expat blogs, WhatsApp chats — every source gave a different name. I eventually realised that everyone was calling the school that was right for their child the "best." Since then, I've taught families this: know your child first, then find the school.

What Is KHDA and Why Does It Matter?

KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) inspects all private schools in Dubai independently, every year. Inspectors assess not just academic results but also student wellbeing, inclusive education, school leadership and parent communication. A school's KHDA rating is the most holistic quality indicator available.

The rating scale: Outstanding → Very Good → Good → Acceptable → Weak.

Key fact: 81% of Dubai students attend schools rated Good or above. Demand for Outstanding schools is very high — places fill up between September and December. Start your research early.

The 23 Outstanding Schools: Notes for Expat Families

All 23 Outstanding schools are listed below. I've added personal coaching notes on the schools Turkish and expat families ask about most.

Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) — UK Curriculum

One of the most recognised names in Dubai. Both the Umm Suqeim and Arabian Ranches campuses are Outstanding-rated. Strong continuity from EYFS through Year 13. One of the most popular choices among Turkish families. Warning: demand is very high and waiting lists can be long — apply early.

Dubai International Academy (DIA) Emirates Hills — IB Curriculum

Dubai's most prestigious full-IB school, offering PYP, MYP and Diploma. Exceptional university placement results. Annual fees exceed 80,000 AED — well above the Dubai average. First-choice for families with a clear global university goal.

Families often ask: "IB or British?" If your child is 8 or younger, the curriculum choice is not yet critical — settling in happily matters most. But if they're over 10 and university plans are taking shape, it becomes very important. IB opens the widest global university doors; the British system is strongest for UK and Commonwealth universities.

Repton School Dubai — UK Curriculum

Brings the tradition of a British independent school to Dubai. Known for balancing academic rigour with student wellbeing. A reliable choice for both primary and secondary. Smaller class sizes mean more individual attention.

Nord Anglia International School — UK / IB Curriculum

Dubai's campus of a global education group. Strong music, arts and sports programmes — ideal for families who prioritise holistic development alongside academics. Collaborates with MIT and Juilliard.

GEMS Wellington International School — UK Curriculum

The flagship school of the GEMS group. Large campus, rich extra-curricular offering and strong IGCSE / A-Level results. A long-trusted institution among the expat community. Fees are high but the breadth of provision is comprehensive.

Dubai College — UK Curriculum

Secondary only (Year 7–13). Selective admission and Dubai's highest A-Level results. A strong choice for academically motivated students who are set on top universities.

Kings School Dubai & Kings School Al Barsha — UK Curriculum

Both campuses are Outstanding-rated — the only dual-campus school group in Dubai at this level. Seamless progression from EYFS through secondary. Turkish families in particular tell me about the warm community feel at both campuses.

Safa Community School — UK Curriculum

Stands out for quality, not scale. Distinguished by its balance of academic performance and student happiness. A good choice for families seeking a more intimate, community-oriented environment.

Dubai English Speaking School (DESS) & Dubai English Speaking College (DESC) — UK Curriculum

DESS for primary, DESC for secondary — together offering an uninterrupted UK education pathway. Reasonable fees combined with high quality make these Dubai's "hidden gems."

GEMS Dubai American Academy (DAA) — US Curriculum

Dubai's most prestigious American curriculum school. Strong AP courses and SAT preparation. Ideal for families targeting US or Canadian universities. For families planning a return to Turkey or targeting UK universities, British or IB is more appropriate.

Özlem Çimen
Özlem Çimen — Personal experience

I lived this choice first-hand. When we moved to Dubai, I enrolled my child at Nord Anglia — the best confirmed option at the time. Then, unexpectedly, we received an acceptance from GEMS Dubai American Academy (DAA) following an academic assessment. We took it. We even relocated within Dubai to be closer to DAA. The lesson: don't lock yourself into a single school. Apply to multiple schools, join waiting lists early, and keep your plans flexible. The best option doesn't always arrive on your timeline.

School by Neighbourhood

Location matters enormously in Dubai — long commutes exhaust both children and parents. Outstanding schools by area:

Fees: A Realistic Picture

Outstanding-rated schools typically charge 55,000–100,000 AED per year. On top of this: registration fee (500–1,500 AED, non-refundable), uniforms and books (3,000–8,000 AED) and extra-curricular activities.

Education allowance: Many companies provide an education allowance for expat employees in Dubai. Check with your HR department — some packages cover up to 80,000–120,000 AED per year in school fees.

If you want to offset part of the fees with a scholarship, many Outstanding schools — including GEMS, Nord Anglia and Repton — offer academic, sport and arts scholarships. See our Dubai School Scholarships guide for details.

Pre-Selection Checklist

Ask yourself before shortlisting

Does your child's English level meet the school's entry requirements?
Is the school a reasonable distance from your home (factor in traffic)?
Does the curriculum align with your target university country?
Are the annual fees within your budget (including any employer allowance)?
Have you visited the school and noticed how your child felt in that environment?
Are you applying to more than one school simultaneously?
Also considering Abu Dhabi? Some families prefer Abu Dhabi based on work location or lifestyle. For the ADEK inspection system, school profiles and the differences from Dubai, see our Abu Dhabi International Schools guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is KHDA and how does the school rating system work?

KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) is the official body that regulates and inspects private schools and nurseries in Dubai. Schools are rated across five categories: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable and Weak. Inspections cover not just academic results but also student wellbeing, school leadership and inclusive education. Reports are publicly available at khda.ae.

How many KHDA Outstanding schools are there in Dubai?

In the 2023–24 KHDA inspection cycle, only 23 out of 209 private schools in Dubai received an Outstanding rating. These include schools offering IB, British and American curricula.

Should KHDA rating be the only factor in choosing a school?

KHDA rating is an important starting point but should not be the sole deciding factor. Your child's English level, family budget, commute distance, curriculum preference and the school's cultural atmosphere all matter as much as the rating.

How long are waiting lists at the best Dubai schools?

Most Outstanding-rated schools have waiting lists of 1–3 years. For popular schools like GEMS Wellington, Repton and JESS, you should apply 12–18 months in advance. Applying to multiple schools simultaneously is the safest way to secure a place.

Which curriculum gives the best university advantage?

The IB Diploma has the broadest recognition for global university applications. A-Level is strongest for UK and Commonwealth universities; AP is preferred for US universities.
