One of the most fundamental questions for Turkish families moving to or considering Dubai is: "How does the education system work here?" Compared to the MEB system in Turkey, what you find is a very different structure — and understanding it is the first step to choosing the right school.
Two School Systems: Government and Private
Government schools are open only to UAE nationals and teach in Arabic. Expat families cannot enrol their children here.
Private international schools are where the vast majority of Dubai's expat community goes. Over 200 private schools offer more than 15 different curricula — from British to IB, American to French Baccalaureate.
What Is the KHDA and Why Does It Matter?
The KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) is the official body that regulates and annually inspects all private schools in Dubai. Every year, KHDA teams visit each school and assess teaching quality, student achievement, leadership, safety and inclusion.
Schools receive one of five ratings: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable or Weak. All inspection reports are publicly available at khda.ae — this transparency is one of Dubai's biggest advantages over other education markets. For a full breakdown of what each grade means and how to use them when choosing a school, read: What Is a KHDA Rating? Outstanding, Very Good, Good Explained →
Curricula in Dubai: Which Is Right for You?
The most common options for expat families:
British Curriculum (EYFS → IGCSE/GCSE → A-Level) — The most widely available in Dubai. Ideal if your child is heading to university in the UK, Australia or Canada.
IB (International Baccalaureate) — Three-stage system: PYP (ages 3–12), MYP (11–16), Diploma (16–19). Recognised by universities in 150+ countries. Strong focus on critical thinking and research skills.
American Curriculum (AP/SAT) — Best if targeting US or Canadian universities. AP courses can count as university credit.
Indian Curriculum (CBSE/ICSE) — Generally lower fees (12,000–35,000 AED/year). Consider carefully if your family doesn't plan to use the Indian university pathway.
School Fees: A Realistic Picture
| KHDA Rating | Annual Fee (AED) | Example Schools |
|---|---|---|
| Outstanding | 40,000 – 100,000 | GEMS Wellington, DIA, Repton |
| Very Good | 25,000 – 65,000 | Jumeirah College, Kings' School |
| Good | 12,000 – 40,000 | GEMS Modern Academy |
Note: Fees above are approximate 2025-26 ranges. Uniform, transport and activities are not included — these can add 20–35% to the total annual cost.
Enrolment Timeline and Waiting Lists
September–November is the main application window for the following academic year. Outstanding schools often have waiting lists 6–18 months in advance — start no later than one year before your move. See our step-by-step enrolment guide here.
Three Key Decisions for Turkish Families
-
1
Which country will your child go to university? — The target country directly shapes the curriculum choice. UK/Australia → British. Global → IB. USA → American.
-
2
How many years will you be in Dubai? — For shorter stays, curriculum continuity is critical. If returning to Turkey after 2–3 years, choose a curriculum that eases the transition back.
-
3
What is your education budget? — Outstanding is not mandatory. Many Very Good schools offer near-Outstanding quality at 30–40% lower fees.
