Summary

Dubai's school registration season opens in September–October for the following year's September start. But KHDA Outstanding schools open waiting lists even earlier. This guide covers the 2026–2027 academic calendar, term dates, and application windows by school type.

When Does Dubai School Registration Season Open? 2026–2027 Calendar Guide

When you start planning a move to Dubai, one of the first practical questions is: "When do I need to start the school registration process?" The answer is almost always earlier than families expect. Schools in Dubai start in September — but for the most sought-after schools, the registration window closes 18 months before that.

The most common thing I hear: "We still have a year." In Dubai, a year can be too late for some schools. When I called Repton recently, they told me: "Our waiting list is currently 14 months long." Families who learn this early are the ones who get their first-choice school.

Dubai Academic Calendar: When Do Schools Start?

Most international schools in Dubai follow the British school model, with the academic year divided into three terms:

2026–2027 Term Dates (Typical British-curriculum Schools)

Autumn Term Early September – mid/late November
Winter break Mid-December – early January (~2.5 weeks)
Spring Term Early January – end of March
Spring break Early April – mid-April (~2 weeks)
Summer Term Mid-April – late June
Summer break July – August (approx. 8 weeks)
American-curriculum schools differ: GEMS American Academy and similar schools use a two-semester model and may start as early as mid-August. Always check the specific school's own academic calendar before applying.

When Does Registration Open?

The registration season depends heavily on the school's KHDA rating and curriculum. The core rule: the more popular the school, the earlier you need to start.

Application Window by School Type

KHDA Outstanding IB schools Waiting lists open July–September. For a September 2028 start you may need to apply by July 2026. Some year groups (Reception, Y1) have 2+ year waiting lists.
KHDA Outstanding British schools Formal applications open September–October. Waiting lists may open earlier. Apply 12–18 months before your target start.
KHDA Good / Very Good schools Applying in November–January is usually sufficient. Start 6–9 months before your target start.
Urgent / short-notice move (<3 months) Use the "mid-year vacancies" filter on the KHDA portal. January (start of Spring Term) is the best mid-year entry point.
Typical waiting times at the most popular KHDA Outstanding schools:
GEMS Wellington International — 12–18 months
Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) — 12–24 months
Repton School Dubai — 10–16 months
Dubai International Academy (IB) — 18–24 months
Safa British School — 8–14 months

Moving Mid-Year? January Enrolment

Not every family can time a September arrival. Job changes, visa processes, or other circumstances may mean you arrive in January, February, or even March. The good news: most Dubai schools accept mid-year enrolment.

The best mid-year entry point is early January — the start of the Spring Term. If you can't make that, April (Summer Term) is possible, though your child will have less time to settle before the summer break.

Practical steps for mid-year enrolment:
1. Go to the KHDA portal → "Find a school" → enable the "mid-year vacancies" filter
2. Call the admissions office at schools that interest you directly
3. Prepare your documents in advance (Transfer Certificate, transcripts, passports) — if a school has a place, you'll need to move quickly
4. Prioritise schools with strong EAL programmes — joining mid-term is harder and language support makes a significant difference

When Should Your Documents Be Ready?

Tracking the registration season is only half the job — your documents also need to be in order. School documents from Turkey require an Apostille and UAE Consulate endorsement, which takes time. Start this process at least 3–4 months before your application date. For the full document checklist and approval chain, see the Dubai School Registration Guide.
