When families relocate to Dubai, one of the first hard truths they encounter is this: the school they want is full. Their waiting list position is 47th. And there are four months until the school year starts.
This scenario plays out for dozens of families every year. Dubai has over 200 private international schools — but for KHDA Outstanding and Very Good-rated schools, demand far exceeds supply. Particularly in British-curriculum and IB schools, waiting lists fill up a year or more in advance.
This guide explains exactly what to do.
Why Are Waiting Lists So Long?
Dubai's expat population is growing fast — and existing school capacity is not keeping up. The number of KHDA Outstanding schools is limited, and these schools deliberately keep their intake small to maintain quality. Meanwhile, families already enrolled rarely leave.
When Should You Apply?
The answer is simple: as early as possible. A practical guide:
| Planned Arrival | School Year Start | Ideal Application | Latest Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| August–September 2027 | September 2027 | January–March 2026 | September 2026 |
| January 2027 (mid-year) | January 2027 | April–June 2026 | October 2026 |
| August–September 2026 | September 2026 | September 2025 | March 2026 |
Application Steps
-
1
Determine curriculum and KHDA rating — Start from the KHDA Outstanding list. Filter by area and curriculum — British, IB or American. (Compare curricula →)
-
2
Apply to 3–5 schools simultaneously — Don't rely on a single school. Each school typically requires a separate online form plus a registration fee (AED 500–1,500). This fee gets you on the list — it is not a place guarantee.
-
3
Prepare complete documentation — Incomplete files mean you fall off the list. See the document table below.
-
4
Stay in regular contact — Send a brief email to admissions once a month: "We remain very interested — please let us know if you need anything further." This keeps you visible without being pushy.
-
5
Act fast when a place is offered — Schools typically give 48–72 hours to accept. Slow responses lose places.
Required Documents
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Passport copy (child + parents) | Must be valid for 6+ months |
| Last 2 years' school reports / transcripts | English translation usually required; notarised |
| Health / immunisation form | Some schools send their own forms |
| Teacher reference letter | From current school, in English |
| Registration fee (AED 500–1,500) | Non-refundable; not a place guarantee |
| Passport-size photo | Most schools accept digital |
Which Schools Have the Longest Waiting Lists?
Official waiting times are not published by schools. Based on family feedback, the most oversubscribed schools are typically:
- GEMS Wellington (multiple campuses): Particularly Motor City and Dubai Silicon Oasis. British curriculum, KHDA Outstanding.
- Repton Dubai: KHDA Outstanding, British curriculum. Secondary years are especially competitive.
- JESS (Jumeirah English Speaking School): Mirdiff and Arabian Ranches. Waiting times can reach 1–2 years.
- Nord Anglia International School Dubai: IB curriculum, KHDA Outstanding.
- Dubai College: Selective admissions policy, age 16+ cohort.

What If You Don't Get In? Plan B
- Very Good-rated schools: Many KHDA "Very Good" schools are academically competitive with Outstanding ones. Read the inspection report rather than relying on the label alone.
- January entry: Some schools revise capacity at the start of term two (January) and accept new students mid-year.
- New campuses: Chains such as GEMS and Nord Anglia occasionally open new campuses — these typically have shorter waiting lists.
- Temporary enrolment: Enrolling at a "second choice" school while waiting for a place at your preferred one is a common and sensible strategy.
