The most common comment I receive on our Dubai school content: "But what if we move to Abu Dhabi?" Most Turkish families relocating to the UAE settle in Dubai, but the number considering Abu Dhabi — especially those working there — is growing steadily. Abu Dhabi is less talked about, but it has an exceptionally strong international school infrastructure. This guide covers Abu Dhabi's school ecosystem, the ADEK inspection system and the leading schools — and then compares the two emirates for different family types.
The Abu Dhabi School System: What Is ADEK?
While Dubai's private schools are regulated by KHDA, Abu Dhabi uses ADEK (Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge). ADEK inspects every private school annually using four categories: Outstanding, Good, Acceptable and Weak. The system closely mirrors KHDA — assessment criteria include academic performance, teaching quality, leadership structure and student wellbeing.
ADEK inspection reports are publicly available at adek.gov.ae at no charge. If you're already familiar with reading KHDA reports, the ADEK format will feel immediately familiar.
Abu Dhabi's Best International Schools
British School Al Khubairat (BSAK)
Founded in 1968, BSAK is one of Abu Dhabi's oldest and most respected international schools. British curriculum (IGCSE and A-Level), ADEK Outstanding-rated, diverse student body, experienced teaching staff. Downside: high demand means waiting lists can be long. Annual fees: AED 55,000–75,000.
Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi campus of the prestigious Surrey school in England. Offers A-Level and GCSE curriculum, with a boarding option available. Strong university placement results, particularly for UK universities. Fees: AED 65,000–90,000.
Abu Dhabi Grammar School Canada (AGS)
One of the rare schools offering a full IB programme (PYP + MYP + Diploma) alongside an Ontario, Canada curriculum foundation. Ideal for families targeting North American universities. Smaller and more community-oriented than some alternatives. Fees: AED 45,000–70,000.
Repton Abu Dhabi
Sister school to Repton Dubai. British GCSE/A-Level curriculum, ADEK Outstanding-rated. Strong campus facilities and sport programmes. Annual fees: AED 55,000–80,000.
GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
Same group as GEMS World Academy Dubai, offering an IB curriculum. ADEK Outstanding-rated. A meaningful choice for families seeking a global IB pathway. Fees: AED 50,000–75,000.
American Community School (ACS)
AP curriculum school with a long-established expat community culture. Strong choice for families targeting US universities. Fees: AED 55,000–85,000.
Raha International School
Stands out for its community feel and smaller campus. Offers IB and British curricula. Fee range is more accessible than other Outstanding schools: AED 38,000–58,000 — making it a strong value option.
The most important advice I give families working in Abu Dhabi: school your child in Abu Dhabi, not Dubai. Even if the E11 motorway commute is 45 minutes each way, doing that twice a day is a significant burden on both the child and the family. The "live near the school" logic that Turkish families know well applies here too — school choice often ends up shaping neighbourhood choice in Abu Dhabi as well.
School Fees in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi international school fees follow a pattern very similar to Dubai. ADEK Outstanding-rated schools typically fall in the AED 50,000–90,000/year range; Good-rated schools in the AED 30,000–55,000 range. Registration fees are usually AED 500–1,500 and are non-refundable. For schools with uniforms, add AED 1,500–3,000 for clothing per year.
ADEK, like KHDA in Dubai, sets annual fee increase caps for schools. Outstanding-rated schools may increase fees by more; lower-rated schools face tighter limits. This mechanism slows rapid fee inflation — but does nothing to reduce demand at popular schools.
Enrolment Process: How Different Is It from Dubai?
The core process is the same as Dubai: research via the ADEK portal → school tour → application form + fee → assessment → offer letter → complete enrolment. Required documents are also identical: passport, visa, previous school transcript (certified English translation), vaccination record.
One thing to watch for: some Abu Dhabi schools request an ADEC (Abu Dhabi Executive Council) approved Health Card during the application process. This card can be obtained before your Emirates ID is issued, but it is rarely required in Dubai. Ask the admissions team about this explicitly.
Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
The answer to this question depends largely on where you work. If you work in Abu Dhabi, schooling your child in Abu Dhabi is the most logical choice. A daily inter-emirate school run is neither practical nor healthy for the child.
In terms of school options, Dubai offers a wider range: 200+ international schools, more KHDA Outstanding choices and more curriculum variety. But Abu Dhabi has its own advantages: a calmer, less congested city environment, stronger community bonds at some schools, and a more personalised learning environment at mid-sized schools.
Both emirates offer IB, British and American curriculum options. Selection criteria are the same: university target, child's profile and language background. For more on this, see our IB vs A-Level vs American curriculum comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Abu Dhabi international schools regulated by ADEK?
Yes — ADEK inspection results are classified as Outstanding / Good / Acceptable / Weak and are publicly accessible at adek.gov.ae.
How do Abu Dhabi school fees compare with Dubai?
Similar range: AED 30,000–95,000 per year. Outstanding schools fall in the AED 50,000–90,000 band.
Is there a quality difference between Abu Dhabi and Dubai schools?
Both emirates have world-class schools. Dubai offers a wider selection; Abu Dhabi offers a calmer environment and stronger community feel at smaller schools.
Are there IB schools in Abu Dhabi?
Yes — AGS offers a full IB programme; GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi and Cranleigh also offer IB or IB-integrated curricula.
Should I choose a school in Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai?
Base the decision on where you work. A daily inter-city school commute creates a serious burden for the whole family.
