- Curriculum: British (EYFS → IGCSE) + IB Diploma / IB CP / A-Level (Post-16)
- Ages: 3–18 (FS1 – Year 13)

GEMS Wellington International School is one of Dubai's most recognised international schools: 12 consecutive KHDA Outstanding ratings, a 2025 IB Diploma average of 36.0, and the British International School of the Year award. But parent reviews tell a more nuanced story — large classes, premium fees, and genuine complaints from a significant minority. This review brings together parent feedback from four independent platforms, KHDA inspection data, and my coaching perspective as an international education consultant who advises expat families in Dubai.

KHDA Inspection Results
The November 2023 KHDA inspection was the school's 13th inspection overall and its 12th consecutive Outstanding rating. That consistency is genuinely rare among Dubai's 209 private schools.

| Quality of Learning | Outstanding |
| Leadership & Management | Outstanding |
| Student Wellbeing | Outstanding |
| Students of Determination (SEN) | Outstanding |

The school also holds COBIS Patron's Accreditation — held by only 37 schools worldwide and the only school in the UAE to carry it — and was named British International School of the Year in 2023, the only UAE school to receive the award.

An IB average of 36.0 is competitive among Dubai's IB schools. See our Dubai IB schools results comparison for broader context. Bear in mind that these results apply to a selective cohort — the school expects students to arrive at or near grade-level academically.
Facilities
The 8-acre Al Sufouh campus offers some of Dubai's most comprehensive facilities:
- 25-metre indoor swimming pool + outdoor pool
- Observatory (supporting an Astronomy GCSE option)
- Floodlit 3G astro turf pitches
- Performing arts studio, dance studio, three art studios
- 472-seat auditorium
- Knowledge Centre library
- Three computer suites + laptop and iPad trolleys
Facilities draw praise even from parents who are critical of other aspects. The common caveat: "The facilities are outstanding but the education quality doesn't always match them."
Parent Reviews: What Four Platforms Say
I aggregated data from WhichSchoolAdvisor (118 reviews), TrustIndex/Google (125 reviews), SchoolsCompared, and expatforum. The overall score sits at 3.5–3.6 out of 5 — strong but not exceptional. These are the themes that emerge consistently across platforms:
- Strong academic outcomes and exam preparation
- Exceptional performing arts and sport programmes
- Genuinely international and inclusive culture
- Strong student wellbeing and confidence-building
- Student leadership opportunities (Tutor Rep, Eco Ambassador)
- Supportive senior leadership team
- "Fourth year in and I couldn't be happier with our choice"
- Class sizes perceived as large; some Year 5 classes reportedly reaching 30
- Only 40% agree fees represent good value
- Bullying complaints appear across multiple platforms
- iPad/earphone use in class described as "lunacy"
- Principal described as "non-approachable"
- Teacher turnover (22%); one child reportedly had 9 different teachers in a year
- Cancelled extracurriculars with poor communication
Parent Satisfaction Ratings (WhichSchoolAdvisor, 2026)
TrustIndex data shows a polarised split: 56% give 5 stars (70 reviews) while 32% give 1 star (40 reviews). This is the hallmark of a school with devoted fans and a vocal minority who had genuinely poor experiences — not a mediocre school across the board.
Not sure which school fits your child?
Is GEMS Wellington the right choice? Let's find out together.
Coaching Perspective: Who Is This School Right For?
I recommend Wellington to families whose child thrives in a large, dynamic school environment — someone who can take advantage of a wide subject and activity menu, is academically prepared, and has at least a basic level of English. Children with a genuine passion for performing arts, music, or sport are particularly well served by the campus.
I am more cautious when: the child loses confidence in large crowds, needs consistent individual attention and teacher continuity, is at a very early stage of English acquisition, or is sensitive to transitions. For those profiles, smaller Outstanding schools — like Kings School Dubai or Safa Community School — often serve better.
Is the Size an Advantage or a Risk?
2,900 students makes Wellington one of Dubai's largest international campuses. Scale works both ways:
- Advantage: Exceptionally wide subject and activity choice (Astronomy GCSE is a good example), 100+ clubs, rich co-curricular life, diverse social environment
- Risk: Individual attention can thin out, students can get lost in the system, class sizes may creep up over time, administrative response can be slow
GEMS Wellington vs Other Wellington Campuses in Dubai
Four campuses operate under the Wellington name in Dubai — important not to confuse them:
| Campus | Area | KHDA | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| WIS — Wellington International School | Al Sufouh | Outstanding | This review; GEMS flagship |
| WAK — Wellington Academy Al Khail | Al Khail | Very Good | Lower fees; growing area |
| WDSO — Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis | Silicon Oasis | Very Good | 4.3/5 parent rating — highest among the four |
| WDH — Wellington Academy Dubai Hills | Dubai Hills | Very Good | Newer campus; 2.7/5 parent rating |
Notably, Silicon Oasis carries the highest parent satisfaction score at 4.3/5 — a smaller school, a more personal environment. If that campus is accessible from where you live and the fees suit your budget, it is worth serious consideration alongside the flagship.
Notes for Expat Families Moving from Turkey
Wellington's 90+ nationality mix makes it one of Dubai's easiest environments to integrate into. EAL (English as an Additional Language) support is available for EAL students. The gap between conversational and academic English is the most common first-term challenge — see our guide on supporting a child with limited English in a Dubai school for practical steps.
The Al Sufouh location is near Dubai Marina and JBR, with reasonable access from Jumeirah or Al Barsha — though Sheikh Zayed Road during morning peak needs to factor into your planning.

Wellington comes up constantly in my consulting work. Strong brand, strong academic outcomes — but the large-school dynamic is real. Two things families consistently underestimate: teacher continuity and class size creep. Verify that both align with your child's learning style before committing. Visit the campus — and try to speak to other parents before or after school, not during an organised tour.
