The IB exams are over, the score is in. The next question — and one many families aren't prepared for — is: "What does this score unlock, and where?" The answer shifts dramatically by country. A 28 opens doors in the Netherlands that remain closed at Oxbridge. A 36 is comfortably competitive in Canada but barely borderline for Imperial. This guide consolidates the real thresholds I've seen families navigate across consultancy sessions.
The thresholds in this guide are drawn from official university data, UCAS statistics and the application processes I've run with dozens of families. Scores shift by programme and year — but the overall picture remains consistent. Treat these as your starting baseline, and always verify current conditions directly with each institution.
The IB Scoring System — What 45 Actually Means
IB Diploma is scored out of a maximum of 45 points: 6 subjects × 7 points each = 42 subject points, plus up to 3 bonus points from Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). The minimum to earn the diploma is 24 points. The global average sits around 30.
Scoring at a Glance
United Kingdom — Oxbridge and Russell Group
The UK remains the most common destination for IB students from Dubai's international schools. Understanding the UCAS timeline, predicted grades and conditional offer mechanism is essential — the system works differently from every other country.
UK Universities — IB Score Thresholds
Key UK timeline point: predicted grades are submitted via UCAS in October/December. The real IB score comes in July. Offers arrive April–May; confirmation or release happens in August. Build this timeline into your planning from Year 1 of the IB.
United States — Top 50 Universities
IB is not required for US admissions — but it signals academic rigour that admissions committees value. US applications assess a much broader package than a score alone: essays, activities, recommendations and standardised tests all matter. Think of IB as a foundation, not the deciding factor.

Netherlands — Research Universities
The Netherlands has become an increasingly attractive destination for Dubai families. English-medium programmes are extensive (600+), annual fees for non-EU students range from €11,000–14,000, and IB acceptance thresholds are more accessible than the UK.
Dutch Universities — IB Score Thresholds
Popular Dutch programmes including Medicine, Psychology and Law operate under numerus fixus: places are capped and allocated via a weighted lottery or selection process. Scoring high is necessary but not sufficient. For a broader guide to settling your family in the Netherlands, see our Netherlands school registration guide.
Canada
Canada offers a more transparent and flexible admissions process than the UK or US. IB scores are converted to local grade equivalents and assessed on a percentile basis within each province's grading scale.
Canadian Universities — IB Score Thresholds
UAE and the Gulf
For families based in Dubai, local options offer logistical ease and no relocation. Career outcomes and global recognition should be weighed carefully when comparing these with UK, Dutch or Canadian alternatives.

Turkey — YÖK Equivalency
IB Diploma is recognised by Turkey's Higher Education Council (YÖK) as a foreign diploma. However, the application pathway to Turkish universities is more complex than simply presenting your IB score.

HL Subject Selection and EE/TOK: The Overlooked Strategy
Two factors matter as much as — sometimes more than — total score: which subjects you take at HL, and your EE/TOK performance. The wrong HL combination can disqualify a high-scoring candidate from their target programme.
HL Subject Expectations by Programme
EE + TOK strategy: Those 3 bonus points resolve borderline situations. A student scoring 33 who earns all 3 EE/TOK points meets a 36-point conditional offer; without them, they don't. Aligning your EE topic with your intended degree subject (e.g. choosing an Economics EE when applying for Economics) strengthens both your score and your personal statement.
Meeting the score threshold is the starting line, not the finish. University selection is a much broader conversation: which country, which programme culture, which campus environment, which career trajectory? Choosing purely by score often leads to expensive course corrections later. I'd be glad to evaluate your child's full IB profile together in a one-to-one session.
