Dubai Boarding Schools Guide 2026: Fees and Options for Expat Families
- Boarding schools in Dubai: Very limited — Repton School Dubai is the most established option
- Repton boarding cost: AED 66,500 (weekly) or AED 72,000 (full) per year, on top of tuition
- Total annual cost at Repton: AED 123,000–175,000 (boarding + tuition)
- UAE alternatives: Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Brighton College Abu Dhabi
- UK boarding: £35,000–55,000/year — better value for 13+ students targeting UK universities
- Best for: Families with travel-heavy roles, split-location households, or UK university aspirations
Dubai is overwhelmingly a day-school city. Most international schools operate Monday–Friday with school buses, and the majority of families live within practical commuting distance of their chosen school. As a result, formal boarding provision is rare: only a handful of schools across the UAE offer residential accommodation, and within Dubai itself, Repton School is the primary established option. This guide covers what Dubai boarding actually looks like, what it costs, and when UAE-wide or UK boarding is the better fit for an expat family's circumstances.
Why Boarding Is Rare in Dubai
Dubai's school market has grown around the expatriate family model: two parents relocating together, living close to school, travelling back to their home country during long holidays. Unlike boarding school cultures in the UK, Switzerland or parts of Asia, Dubai families rarely need residential schooling as a practical necessity.
Most international schools in Dubai operate a 7:30am–2:30pm day with optional after-school activities until 5:00pm. School buses cover most residential areas. This makes boarding largely redundant for the typical family. When boarding does become relevant, it is usually because:
- One parent has a role requiring extended travel or assignment to a second location
- Parents are relocating back to a home country temporarily while the child finishes an exam year in Dubai
- The family wants early exposure to a boarding environment as preparation for UK sixth-form or university
- A child has a specific talent (sport, music, drama) best served by a school with residential provision
Boarding Schools in Dubai
Repton School Dubai — The Main Option
Repton School Dubai (Nad al Sheba) is Dubai's most established boarding school, offering both weekly and full boarding for students in Years 7–13. It is one of very few KHDA-regulated schools in the emirate with formal residential provision.
Weekly boarding (Mon–Fri nights): AED 66,500/year
Full boarding: AED 72,000/year
These fees are charged in addition to tuition (AED 57,178–102,753/year depending on year group)
| Year Group | Tuition (day) | + Weekly Boarding | + Full Boarding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 7–9 | AED 75,000–82,000 | ~AED 141,500–148,500 | ~AED 147,000–154,000 |
| Year 10–11 (IGCSE) | AED 86,000–89,000 | ~AED 152,500–155,500 | ~AED 158,000–161,000 |
| Year 12–13 (IB / A-Level) | AED 100,000–103,000 | ~AED 166,500–169,500 | ~AED 172,000–175,000 |
Repton's boarding house holds approximately 80 students from diverse nationalities. The house system operates with dedicated houseparents and a 24/7 duty rota. Weekly boarders return home on Friday afternoons and return Sunday evenings; full boarders remain on campus during term time.
- KHDA Outstanding rating (10 consecutive years)
- Established house system, 80+ nationalities
- Weekly boarding option gives flexibility
- Strong IB and A-Level results for post-16
- Dubai location — family can visit easily
- Small boarding community (~80 students)
- Very high total cost (AED 140,000–175,000/year)
- Nad al Sheba location limits weekend activities
- Not ideal if family is away for full terms
- Boarding pastoral reputation less tested than UK schools
UAE Boarding Schools Outside Dubai
If boarding is a firm requirement and Dubai options feel limited, two Abu Dhabi schools offer stronger boarding programmes, with more established residential communities.
| School | Location | Curriculum | Boarding type | Approx. boarding fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cranleigh Abu Dhabi | Abu Dhabi | British (IGCSE / A-Level) | Full & weekly | AED 70,000–85,000/year |
| Brighton College Abu Dhabi | Abu Dhabi | British (IGCSE / A-Level) | Weekly boarding | AED 60,000–75,000/year |
Both Cranleigh and Brighton College Abu Dhabi are newer schools (opened 2014 and 2013 respectively) but have built established boarding communities. The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is approximately 90–120 minutes, which makes weekend visits practical. Both schools follow the British curriculum through IGCSE and A-Level, aligning with most Dubai-based British curriculum families.
Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
Cranleigh is the sister school of Cranleigh School in Surrey (one of the UK's established independent schools). The Abu Dhabi campus opened in 2014 and has consistently grown its boarding community. Pastoral care follows the UK house system model. The school has earned strong inspection ratings from ADEK (Abu Dhabi Education and Knowledge).
Brighton College Abu Dhabi
Brighton College Abu Dhabi follows its UK parent school's ethos closely. Brighton College UK is consistently ranked among the top UK independent schools, and the Abu Dhabi campus benefits from shared curriculum resources and teacher development. Weekly boarding is available; the school community is smaller and considered more personal than Cranleigh.
When UK Boarding Makes More Sense
For many expat families in Dubai, UK boarding schools are actually the most rational choice once a child reaches Year 9 (age 13–14) — especially if UK university is the intended destination.
| Factor | Dubai / UAE Boarding | UK Boarding |
|---|---|---|
| Annual total cost | AED 130,000–175,000 | AED 160,000–250,000 (£35–55k) |
| Boarding community size | Small (60–120 students) | Large (200–600 boarders) |
| UK university preparation | Moderate (UCAS support) | Strong (direct relationships with unis) |
| Distance from family | Same city / UAE | 4–6 hours flight from Dubai |
| Pastoral experience | Developing | 100+ years established tradition |
| Extracurricular depth | Good | Exceptional (sport, music, drama) |
| Social network value | Dubai expat peer group | Global, UK-connected peer group |
If your child is 13+ and you are considering boarding primarily for academic reasons or UK university preparation, the marginal cost increase of UK boarding over UAE boarding is often worth it. The UK boarding school social network, university placement rates, and pastoral infrastructure have been built over a century. UAE boarding schools, however good, are newer institutions still developing those traditions.
UK boarding becomes clearly preferable when:
- The child is entering Year 9 (Common Entrance / 13+ entry)
- Target universities are Russell Group (London, Oxbridge, Edinburgh)
- The family assignment in Dubai may not last the full A-Level period
- The child has a specific elite-sport or performing arts pathway
Day School + Private Accommodation: A Practical Alternative
Some families in Dubai who need boarding-like arrangements but cannot find a suitable residential school use an alternative: a guardian arrangement combined with a strong day school. The child lives with a carefully vetted guardian family in Dubai and attends an Outstanding-rated day school.
This arrangement costs significantly less than formal boarding and keeps the child in Dubai's school environment. It works best when:
- One parent relocates temporarily (3–12 months) while the other remains in Dubai
- The child is in a critical exam year (Y10–Y13) and changing school would be disruptive
- A trusted family member or vetted guardian is available in Dubai
Admissions: What Boarding Schools Require
Boarding admissions in Dubai and the UAE typically require more documentation than day-school applications:
- Academic reports: Last 2–3 years' school reports (English translation if needed)
- Entrance assessment: Most schools require an academic entrance test (similar to CAT4 or a school-specific test)
- English language: Non-native English speakers may need an English proficiency test
- Reference letters: From the current head teacher and/or form tutor
- Boarding suitability assessment: Some schools conduct an interview to assess whether the child is ready for boarding life
- Medical clearance: Full medical history and vaccination record
Apply at least 6–9 months in advance for boarding places, which are more limited than day-school places. Repton Dubai boarding is particularly competitive — early application is essential.
A Coach's Note

In my consulting work, boarding comes up in two main situations: a parent whose role requires extended travel, and a family planning a mid-secondary transition to UK boarding who wants their child to gain some residential experience first. For the first group, Repton's weekly boarding usually works well — the parent can still come home most weekends. For the second group targeting UK boarding at 13+, I generally recommend focusing on entrance exam preparation rather than an intermediate UAE boarding step. The UK 13+ Common Entrance papers require targeted preparation regardless of where the child is currently studying. If you are weighing boarding options, the right path depends on your child's academic profile, your family's circumstances, and your target outcomes.
